Newbie with what cables and how to hook up

Hello, I am new to this HT set up and have questions on what cables to use and how to hook my components up. I know i will be using Monster for all my cables just do not know what series, M or THX. I will list my components and the hook ups they have on the back. TV - Sony Vega FD trinitron KV-36FS10(old but get compliments on picture) - Under "Video IN" #1 has S-video then regular a/v jacks, #3(no #2) has just a/v jacks and #4 has component with left and right audio. vhf/uhf for cable. Then under "Out" under Monitor just a/v jacks and under "OUT" Audio var/fix just audio. Cable Box - Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2200 - Cable in/out, S-video out, Digital audio out(looks like a regular audio jack) and regular a/v jacks. Sony RDR-VX500 VCR/DVD Recorder(old too) - Cable in/out, Line 1 in is a/v jacks, then "line out" is a/v jacks, then component/audio "out", S-Video out and Digital coaxial and optical audio out. Sony STR-DA2100ES receiver - "Video 1" S-Video in/out & a/v jacks in/out, "Video 2" a/v jacks in/out, "DVD" S-Video in and a/v jacks in, "TV/SAT" S-Video in and a/v jacks...

HDMI cable quality.

Many customers ask me, why should I spend $100 vs. $50 for an HDMI cable? Simple, you get what you pay for. I direct them to watch Noel Lee demoing the cables on the Monster website, very interesting. Many cables truthfully cannot pass a 1080p signal, the pipe is too small. So you have your new $2000 lcd or $4000 plasma, don't you want total performance from it? Would Tony Stewart put 100mph tires on his race car? Your cable is a one-time purchase! Monster gives you the incredible "Cable for Life" replacement on the HDMI 1000 series, you can't beat that. Your cables and Power Center are cheap, they will give you maximum performance no matter what components you change in the future. So go for the best!

I took my receiver in to be fixed at a repair shop and was told by the repair man to be careful on buying "too expensive" of cables???? He actually told me that the cables are built better than a lot of the electronics they go to...I love my Monster Cables and would never buy anything else...but has anyone else been told that? Or experienced some problems taking them on and off? Is there any way to make them not so tight??? Thanks

Slingbox Cables

I use a Slingbox Pro and use pretty much generic component cables to go from the HD connect and to the TV. They are probably 3 ft connections at most. I have heard different stories about how the shorter the length, the less you need quality cables. Would I benefit from Monster cables for my Slingbox?

Video switching for HDMI?

I know there's a religious war going on out there about HDMI. As I see it, there are two camps: the "it's the best quality out there" camp and the "it's proprietary" camp. Now, I'm not a zealot, and I'm not even the videophile that can tell much difference between HDMI and component video. But one clear advantage I see of component (and others) over HDMI is that I can switch component video through my receiver (fewer remote controls, baby!) but not HDMI. So, after all that, my question is somewhat specific... Will I ever be able to switch HDMI that way? And should I care?

Is there such thing as HDMI pass thru?

With limited HDMI inputs on my TV and so many HDMI components available out there including the NETGEAR EVA 8000 HD and Apple TV, I am going to have to either go with an HDMI switch (expensive!) or manually swap out components when I want to use them. I know on older A/V components, you could pass audio and video signals through the device so that if the device was in use, it would take over control of the line. This may sound naive but would this be possible on newer components with HDMI? Is there an example of this out there for the port-challenged folks like me?
